About the Artist

DSC_0714.JPG

I have “played” with clay for over 20 years. As a young girl, I was fascinated with art, always drawing, painting and coloring, but it was during college that I began experimenting with clay as a medium.

I graduated from the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of the Art, and have been working in clay ever since.

My pottery is inspired by nature and fantasy, themes present in the art of my youth. Using a combination of wheel throwing, coil, and slab methods, I transform utilitarian forms into exciting and beautiful contemporary stoneware. My work is spontaneous and organic. I embellish my pieces with clay additions, carving, and layering impressions of handmade stamps taken from unusual sources. Influenced by the colors and textures found in my many travels and growing up in sunny South Florida, my pallet is lush and vibrant.

I am perhaps most notably collected for my mastery of glaze patterning and critical attention to detail. My work possesses a playful touch that speaks to contemporary sensibilities.

The Process

The white stoneware clay is thrown and altered by carving, with stamps and also clay additions. Multiple glazes and underglazes are applied to achieve rich surface decoration. All glazes are food safe and lead free. Gas and electric kilns high fire the clay to create beautiful tableware, kitchen tools and whimsical sculptures.

Due to the variations in a handmade item each piece is a little different and the color and size may vary.

The clay begins to talk to me, telling me what it wants to be.
